William Yee (Yee Wee Lam), of San Francisco, passed peacefully on August 4, 2012. Our Pop was born in 1926 in a village near the city of San Fao in Guangzhou, China. His life is a story about family, sacrifice, hardships, and endurance. He came to the United States, in 1949, to seek a better life for his family and future generations. It took 8 years of work and savings for him to send for his wife and children from China.
Pop met many of his lifelong friends while working at the Stanford Convalescent Home. He had a long career as a barbeque chef at Trader Vic's in Emeryville. Along with Ma, he enjoyed trips to Reno and Chinese movies. They both valued education, Chinese culture, home cooking, and family. Upon retirement, Pop, with Ma, spent many selfless hours babysitting their grandchildren, helping their children fix up their homes, and also made a trip back to visit his home village in China in the early 1990s with their son Bob.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Wai Chun Tom Yee; son Calvin (Una) Yee, daughter Maria (Donald) Ho, and son Bob (Jill) Yee; grandchildren Kristen (Barry) Thomson, Timothy Yee, Kimberly (Christopher) Pruett, Benjamin Yee, and Katie Ho (Luke); and great grandchildren Spencer Thomson, Isla Thomson and Carter Pruett. He also leaves a sister Big Jun Lee.
The family deeply thanks the staff at Kaiser Redwood City for their extraordinary care and compassion.
Family and friends are invited to a service at Cypress Lawn, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, in the Tiffany Chapel, on Aug 12 at 1pm, followed by interment. The family requests that donations be made to their favorite charity, or Edmond's Plaza Florist 120E 3rd Ave. San Mateo, CA 94401 (650) 343-2200, under the William Yee Memorial Service, where floral arrangements have been preselected.
